Collaborative Partners:
Seawolf Scholars Foster Youth Program at Sonoma State University
In 2016, Power to Soar Foundation established a grant for the Seawolf Scholars Foster Youth Program at Sonoma State University, which assists current and former foster youth in developing a campus community, and in accessing essential on and off-campus resources.
During our research into college programs, Seawolf Scholars stood out on a number of levels. Through State Assembly Bill 194, they are able to offer Priority Registration to enrolled current and former foster youth. For students needing specific classes to graduate within a four year period, this increased access to enroll in those needed classes is a significant advantage.
What most impressed the Power to Soar Foundation’s Board is the Professional Advisory support provided to students during their college experience. 30% of students drop out of college in their first year, according to the national average. Of the foster youth who attend college only 2-9% attain Bachelor’s degrees.
Sonoma State has an overall retention rate of 81% for their freshman students. They offer special advisory support to foster youth and this is one of the reasons why Power to Soar Foundation chose them as a partner. Be sure to read our Collaborative Spotlight post to learn more.

Their mission is to improve the life and success rate of former foster youth through a variety of services and supports that promote educational achievement. PSF shares the same priorities and we look forward to working with Guardian Scholars on our shared goals.
